A great find!

This is NOT another cookie-cutter pub. It's a small, friendly place to grab a pint and hang out with friends. The cheese board was a beautiful array of local cheeses, fresh fruit, chutney and pickles. Wonderful!

Super Friendly Atmosphere and Delicious Food

I was in Galway for business and I had to pick up a place for lunch. I walked in this place that didn't seem open for lunchtime, where few guys were talking among them. I found an excuse to start talking as I had a few spare hours before the train. After less than 3 minutes I started feeling like I had known that place, those people, since my entire life! I had a delicious panini prepared by their authentic Italian chef and I felt very welcome to spend all the time left there! Also, the coffee was very good. I strongly recommend the Black Gate, a must-visit spot in Galway :) ...ps great music

Excellent place

It is one of the best places in Galway to go it alone. Excellent service, the quality of the individual cheese board came back being perfect. Really an amazing place with wonderful wines!

Relaxed, engaging atmosphere, great cheese board and wine list

This place is a gem. It's a charming spot where the staff are friendly. There is always a great selection of wines. The meat and cheese board comes highly recommended. The walls are lined with books and art, and they host regular music evenings, films, exhibitions etc. I have never yet left this place feeling anything other than relaxed. What's not to love...

Wonderful!

One of my favourite places in Galway! Great music, wonderful staff, delicious cheeseboards, and a great variety of superb wines and beer and lovely teas and coffee! The Black Gate is one of a kind and the perfect place to go to enjoy delicious wine and beer and divine cheeseboards with great advice from knowledgeable and friendly staff! The atmosphere in the black gate is very special and perfect to go with friends or in a smaller group as it is the perfect place for a more intimate catch up with loved ones! Also the perfect place to pop in on your own if you feel like relaxing with your book and a glass of vino, or a cup of tea/coffee or sitting at the bar as the staff, regulars and clientele are so open and friendly and full of stories! The Black Gate is a truly special place, if you are visiting Galway it is a must or if you are from the area and haven't been yet, make sure to pop in as it will become your local!

Black Gate: An Appetite to Sate? Go on a Date or Bring a Mate, it's Open Late!

Late July, Galway. A city swollen with spirited ranks of Arts Festival go-ers. The Mission--a place for a nightcap, with patrons that weren't sloppy, loud, crude, or rude. Also, with craic. The Solution--Black Gate. Then again, the Black Gate never disappoints. I can bring a date, family, or a group of friends, and everyone is suitably impressed, whether it's regarding the modest but excellent wine and beer on offer, the delicious cheeseboard (always a winner!), or the atmosphere to suit all--a quiet tête-à-tête in the corner, chatty meet n' greet at the bar, or a foot-stomping musical melee in the basement.
