Beautiful Church

Made a vitit in the Churck after visiting the graves of St. Patrick and St Bridget. There were members of the church there who were providing information and answering questions. Very moving.

Is Saint Patrick buried here?

On my first morning in Northern Ireland we visited Downpatrick. There wasn’t time to go to the St Patrick’s Visitor Centre (will reserve for a return visit), but took our time admiring the mosaics and stained class in the church and browsing in their little shop. The views across the Mourne Moutains are lovely (pity about Costa in the foreground), and we spent some time beside the grave in which the remains of Ireland’s famous saint reputedly rest. It was something of a revelation to me to realise the strong connection of St Patrick with the North (as I had assumed he was a southern saint), and you can drive the St Patrick’s Trail in his footsteps. A saint of the late 4th/early 5th century, St Patrick was captured from his home in the British Isles and taken as a slave to Ireland. Having later trained as a priest, he is famous for holding up the tripartite Shamrock leaf to demonstrate the mystery of the Trinity (’three persons in one God’). There is a very nice reproduction Celtic cross on approach to the church; so good that we thought it was original.
