Sit and enjoy!

A little off the beaten track (and all the better for it), St. Leonard’s Garden is actually a lovely, restored fever hospital graveyard. It is now a beautiful sensory garden, lovingly maintained by local hands. Grave markers have been respectfully lined up around the walls, giving the garden a lovely contemplative atmosphere, without seeming creepy. This is a lovely place to simply sit and think.

A small haven in a busy town

This sensory garden is small, but has plenty of seats & is only a couple of minutes walk from Clanbrassil St (main street). Lots of people eat their lunch here etc on sunny days. Small kids can be safely let out of the buggy for a run around as it has only one exit. A treat for my kids is a gingerbread man from The Home Bakery (opposite the cathedral) eaten out of doors.

Can sometimes be small groups of teenagers there ’hanging out’ or a wino snoozing on a bench - but nothing to cause undue concern. Modern life in an urban environment...

It won’t set anyone’s world on fire, but it is a good use of what was basically a piece of waste ground / abandoned graveyard. It is prettier than in the pictures, but has no shelter or toilets. That said, there are plenty of small Irish pubs around it where you can shelter. Personally, I most like the one called The Windmill (also serves food at lunch time). McManus’ Pub is also an interesting one to visit - but is very young, loud and full on Thurs, Fri & Sat nights.

Well developed Gardens in Town

Situated in a quiet area of Dundalk are the well developed gardens that are lovely to walk around on a beautiful Spring day (Summer or Autumn either). Quiet and tranquil. You will most likely meet somebody to chat too who knows a lot about this area
