See it, if Possible, at Sunset

Quite by accident, after roaming the walking trails of Killarney National Park for several ambling hours, we reached Ross Castle just as the golden sun was illuminating its west-facing wall toward Lough Leanne. Striking, stately, and enthralling--you'll enjoy traipsing the grounds even if you're too late to explore inside, and the sense of history is breathing out of each rocky nook and cranny.

Beautiful Ross Castle

Just on the banks of the lake, we rode by the Ross Castle on the way into Killarney National Park. Beautiful location with a dock for boat rides.

One of our favorite Castle Tours

We absolutely loved this castle tour. The guide was funny & made it interesting. Great info & stories. It's well worth the cost of the ticket. We arrived just as a group was starting the tour. I get the impression you can't do a self guided tour if they have tours running. It is furnished with typical medieval furnishings for that time period which is nice. It sits on a lake. You aren't supposed to take pictures inside.

This castle is one of my favorites and is set on a beautiful lake and is a great example of old castles of Ireland. They have a small restaurant to grab a bite to eat while enjoying this attraction. Lots of great photo opportunities.

Ross Castle Tour

Visited Ross Castle on a sunny Sunday morning. The catle itself is tastefully restored to 15th century state with 2 sections for visitors - first section is free with details of castle history on the walls and the second requires a ticket for the guied tour. I found the tour guide to be friendly and knowledgable. It is worth booking the ticket for the tour as they are limited and you could find yourselff sitting around for the next - there is a little coffee shop at the side of the castle that sells snacks if you have to wait. Castle is small so the tour does not take too long - be aware that there is spiral stairs with smallish steps which probably won't suit everyone. Worth a look!
