Enjoyed with my greyhounds

After been told about Roe Valley country park on TA when I was staying in Portstewart decided to check it out.
It was well worth it and much enjoyed it. We chose a circular walk which took us back over the River.
Much enjoyed.

BEAUTIFUL PARK WITH THE SCENIC RIVER ROE AND ALL ITS MAGICAL HISTORY

Beautiful, scenic historic area. Visitors centre is at The Dog’s Leap a great historic story with coffee shop, great walks. The river is beautiful and so many great views. My favourite is under the bridge at the Dog Leap, you are down at the rivers edge, there are enormous rocks on the other side. It is a very special place.

Great place to unwind

The Country Park is a great place to simply chill and unwind. Picnic tables are available at the main car park as are toilets (close quite early though), and you have the added benefit of a cafe on site. Electric car no problem, even has a charging point. You can walk at your leisure for along the side of the River Roe or join the many jogging around the path. Dog walkers are in abundance and the vast majority as responsible keeping their pets on leads and cleaning up after .
However, there are a few who seem to believe it is acceptable to allow their dogs to foul wherever and ignore the problem despite several red dog waste bins and allow their dogs to run free. This would be the only downfall, thankfully the Country Park have a great “crew” who keep the place maintained.

Hints . During the wet weather be aware like all forest parks that the paths can become waterlogged in places and quite muddy. And good idea to keep an eye where you place your feet especially if you have young ones with you #somedogownersareirresponsible

Lovely whatever the weather

We visited Roe Valley park a few weeks ago before the current covid restrictions came in. As always it was lovely to walk along the river bank watching the water rush past and looking out for interesting birds. At first the path is well maintained, further on it becomes a bit muddy but is fine with the right shoes. On this occasion it was a sunny day but it is still pleasant to walk when it is raining as there is some shelter from the trees.
In the summer the wild flower meadow was really pretty.
The entertaining goats in the field by the visitor centre are keen to rush up and say hello in the hope you have brought them a carrot.
We visited the Ritter tea rooms for coffee. It was a little bit hot and stuffy in there for the current situation so we were glad to take our refreshments to the tables outside. We usually have their excellent white chocolate and raspberry scones but they were sold out so we had a fifteen instead which wasn’t quite so good. We look forward to being able to go back soon.

Autumn walk

We did the river walk from the Roepark hotel to Cahons rock and back. The river Roe was lovely with a lot of water in it. The paths were very well marked and well kept even with a large foot fall. If it is wet I would recommend a sturdy pair of shoes.

beautiful park

We often visit the country park and just love the peace and quiet you find as you walk along the well kept paths close to the beautiful River Roe. we did a full circut of the park yesterday it took us four hours but that included a break for a coffee and we certainly were in no rush. The only thing I do feel is that if the Park service can provide dog poo bins they should also put a litter bin beside them and this might solve the problem of the litter that is lying about. Did notice someone passed a remark about the notice about dogs that worry sheep will be shot and how shocked they were about it but I think signs like that are necessary as too many dogs are allowed to run free without the owners caring where they are and the poor farmer would be even more shocked to find his/her flock and probable livelihood destroyed by roaming dogs Having been there 3 times since Covid restrictions have been lifted we have found the facilities excellent the toilets have been spotless and I would have no hesitation about using them Well done Roe Valley Forest Park staff
