Interesting

Monasterboice is out of the way, only approachable by car or a good walk after a bus ride but the ancient high crosses with stories from the Bible depicted in stone are priceless. The area is no longer a monastery but a cemetery and graves are well-marked and also interesting.

Very interesting and historical

We visited as part of a tour. Very beautiful and historical artifacts. Our tour guide gave us great information so we can understand the historical significance of the site.

Historical site

It took us a while to find Monasterboice as our GPS did not list it. We had to consult the map that came with our rental car and then try to follow the signs. It was on our list of things to see so we were determined and were very happy when we finally found it. We arrived on a lovely sunny morning and we were practically the only ones there so wandering around taking in the history was very enjoyable. We marveled at the beautifully detailed high crosses and ruins of the churches. Highly recommend

Fine monastic site with wonderful high crosses

Open daylight hours, Free. Named after St Buite, a disciple of Patrick. Car parking and toilets. Founded in the late 5th century and superseded by Mellifont later. Monasterboice is most famous for its spectacular high crosses. Inside the ruins stands the impressive Muiredach’s High Cross (922 AD, 5.5 metres high). It features biblical carvings of both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible and a copy is held in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The Monasterboice round tower was used as a watchtower and refuge for monks and valuables during times of Viking attack. The churches are 14 to 15th century. The scenic ruins are well worth a visit.

Curiosity

If you haven’t seen too many cemetaries in Ireland, then this might be worth the time to take this side trip. Very interesting but a very small cemetary. Lots of signs about active thieves in the area but we had no issues - but we were the only people there at the time.
