Holy Ground for Addicts

In Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Dublin is the shrine for a glorious man of prayer who took the pledge and lived clean for many years. Worth a stop for prayer and reflection at his tomb. Matthew Talbot pray for all who suffer from alcohol and drug addictions and for their family members.

Exceptional

This stupendous Neo-Romanesque edifice, dating from 1954, makes a marvellous first view on approach. Red brick walls throughout the facades are most impressive.

A Catherine wheel window on the frontage is a further architectural milestone, amongst many. A gorgeous mosaic is to admired in the portico.

At the entrance is a gorgeous contemplative grotto to Our Lady with a pious figure kneeling deep in adoration.

On our day of visit the altar area was suffused with an ethereal glow of colourful light. A crucifix is placed between the altar and superseding lunnettes.

A breathtaking vista is along the nave to the effervescent dome encircling the altar.

Matt Talbot, Venerable, has a central place in the church, with a shrine dedicated to his life, service and holiness.

Visit this church

I strolled past Our Lady Of Lourdes Church in Sean MacDermott Street on a walk and knew the story of Matt Talbot but wasn’t interested in going in but decided on a whim to go in and I’m glad I did. It’s not a fancy church like most you step into but a proper community parish church. His life story is there for you to see and other Irish life as well like (Monto) I found it worth the walk and just plain interesting. Do yourself a favour and call in and leave some Euro’s for the upkeep as well. You never know it might do some good for someone. I did ????

Matt Talbot shrine -- an inner city surprise

Matt Talbot had a drinking problem in whiskey-loving Dublin, and so did his brothers. His life was going nowhere. He still lived with his mother. Nobody really knew him, except for the latter part of his life, when he seemed to stay clear of the drink, and tried to get others to do the same. But when he dropped dead on a Dublin street in 1925, and his body was found to have chains and cords wrapped tightly around his waist and arms, the entire city took notice.

Get the rest of the story from the internet. But if you know of someone with a drinking problem, and you know the power of prayer, stop into this church, visit the glass-covered tomb of this saint-in-process, and light a candle.

Make sure you realize that this shrine is actually the left-hand chapel inside of Our Lady of Lourdes church. The right-hand side is another grotto-style depiction of our Lady of Lourdes (now THERE is another great place to visit, in Lourdes, France!) There is some history written on the walls (eg. explaining the story of a certain rather small statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus). I just found that sitting down to spend some quiet time after the bustle of Dublin’s O’Connell street was great!

On my particular visit, I happened to stumble upon a 3:00 p.m. recitation (to video and music) of the Divine Mercy chaplet, which it appears is said daily, in addition to regular church services.
