A link with Ireland’s past - and with Peronne in Northern France.
This old church, now roofless and ruined, is In of Killursa cemetery. Dating from the 7th century, its name, "Cill Fhursa" (anglicised to Killursa) means the church of St Fursa (Fursey). Fursa travelled to what is now Northern France, founding a church in Peronne, where he is still remembered.
Cill Fhursa remained the church of the people, though during the Penal Times, when Catholicism was persecuted in Ireland, this must have been sporadic and secretive.
Eventually, in the early 19th century a local landowner, who had served in the British army in Spain and Portugal under the command of Arthur Wellesley ( later Duke of Wellington) built a new church in Claran, about a mile or so further from Headford.
This church is in use still, and is worth a visit, both for its own sake, and because of 3 comemorative plaques inside which tell its story much better than I can.

A happy find
I had it emerged driven past the turning for Ross Errilly where I was headed, but then came across bother a ruined castle and this beautiful and poignant ancient church. The little monument by the gate to all the children, buried there was especially moving and appreciated. A place to linger and pray
So when you are heading for Ross Errilly, pass the turning and drive on. This church takes the breath away.

Church from 600 AD
We had some difficulty finding this church, and just happened upon it. Simple OLD church ruins with a modern cemetery. Great photo of Ross Erilly Friary from this church. Right off the road. No hiking involved.
