A Sobering Experience

So much history and tragedy here in this wild place overlooking the sea. The memorials to the two great Achill tragedies ( Clew Bay and Scotland) recall the unbearable sorrow experienced by this small island community.. Since I first came to Achill 14 years ago, several friends have passed away and are buried in this quiet graveyard. Despite this, there is an overwhelming sense of peace and tranquillity here.

Spiritual stones

I visited this amazing place recently. Park up the road towards the life boat station on the left and walk back. I was blown away not only by the layout of the place and the map but by the sheer remoteness of it. Most of all though is that there are headstones from 1700s to 1800s to 1900s and some really old ones I reckon we are looking at least middle ages going by the simplicity of the crosses on some. Most of all though and is well worth a long look because we have the link to migration to Scotland of seasonal laborers, two stones commemorating the deaths of people who perished in the waters nearby. Also a treasure is the headstones that are personalised with shells little stones little statues of Mary. I’ve never seen it before in Ireland anywhere and I’ve been all across Ireland. I looked in other cemetaries in Achill and it seems to be just in this one. so its unique. I stand corrected if wrong.

A Haunting reminder of Achill’s story

We traveled here to see the gravestones/memorials to the people whose stories are told so vividly in the Achill Experience. It was an incredibly moving experience to stand there and bear witness in this beautiful place.

Just a beautiful little church ruin!

This is right on the road out of Achill on the way to the coast on part of the Atlantic Drive. As photographers, we relish seeing the ruins with the beautiful Celtic crosses in the photos to show the history of the church. It also is special that it is directly on the water. Stop for a few minutes in contemplation.

Great sense of history.

Beautiful location with lots of history. This cemetery is well worth a visit . Although a lot of the mass graves are very sad to read about. There is access to the waters edge & an old well .
