A fascinating memorial in a prominent location!

Our shuttle bus from the port of Dublin had dropped us in Merrion Square. From there, we headed off on foot towards Dublin’s main shopping precinct around Grafton Street, taking in the sights as we went.
When we reached one of the main entrances to St. Stephen’s Green, we came upon this fascinating memorial which pays tribute to the massive number of Irish folk who died as a result of the great Irish famine.
The most striking part of the memorial is the curved long wall of narrow stone blocks which stands behind the abstract figures cast in bronze. We found that the size of the wall tended to distract our attention from the figures portrayed in bronze. Amongst the figures cast in bronze are representations of Irish peasants and also a portrayal of Wolfe Tone, a great Irish republican leader.
This is certainly a significant memorial located in a prominent location. Whilst the abstract style of portraying the human figures in the memorial, may not be to everybody’s taste, the memorial is worth viewing and taking a few moments to remember!

Abstract Tribue to Famine Victims

I’m not sure what to say about this memorial, it was sculpted as a tribute to the victims of the great Irish famine. Its in abstract form but sometimes the sculptor’s vision and interpretation fails to connect with the mind of the viewer. Unfortunately, with me, this is one of those occasions and I will admit a dislike for abstract art.

Too Abstract to Capture the Tragedy

This memorial stands in tribute to the victims of the great famine. Sadly, the sculpture is so abstract in it’s representation that in my personal opinion it fails to capture the great tragedy and suffering. If the great famine wasn’t such a well known part of history in UK, I’d probably have just missed this sculpture.
