Fabulous beach and walk whatever the weather

If you have checked the forecast and are equipped for it, this is a fabulous walk. Cross beach is such an uplifting place with the views of the islands and at the far end of Slieve Mór and the Achill Headland, breathtaking. The walk around cross lake starts a bit down the beach, look for the signs along the sand dunes . You can do the long or the short walk. There is parking and facilities by the old cemetery and abbey ruins. In Irish folklore the lake is where the children of Lír are supposed to have lived until they went to the Inis Gluairé off the coast where they died and are buried.

Start of our small Wild Atlantic Way

Beautiful coastal trail starting at the old Cross Abbey ruins, we parked too soon so keep going! From the old Abbey and graveyard you head down along the beach. Beach goes on forever and so beautiful but you only walk for approximately 2.5km before you cut back up toward a marked pathway along the sand dunes and Cross lake. You can then decide on the short or long route, all signed. A beautiful walk that we luckily had sunshine for but I can only imagine how stunning in Winter this would be also.

Just stunning

We didn’t manage the walk but the beach alone is worth the visit. Absolutely stunning. The only way to describe it. Beautiful place to visit, great beach to walk on. Picnic area and toilet facilities also available. Must visit this place while in the area, truly a hidden gem.

Gorgeous

I did this walk on a cloudless day at fairly low tide. The beach was immense, the scene lovely. I normally prefer coastal walks with more up-and-down relief, cliffs, and so forth, but this was hugely impressive in its own way. And of course you can stop, paddle, swim, sunbathe along the way. But take/wear shoes for the inland return journey.

Walk on the beach

A lovely walk on the beach, and on a road by farms. Some sandy, some rocky, so wear shoes. Compared to other walks in the area, this was pretty short. Also flat. Highly recommended.
