Touchstone

Charles Stewart Parnell made his last public appearance here in 1891, speaking for over two hours in the rain to a crowd that started with 3,000 before diminishing greatly. Already ill before coming to Creggs, Parnell was further sickened by the exertion and died a week later. I don’t know if the great-grandfather who lived nearby was in the crowd, but the event was still recounted in my youth as an important episode in the community’s history. Seeing it and the town through which my grandfather passed in his 1910 trek to Chicago long figured as a top destination for me. Each time I’m in the area, where several cousins live, I stop by.

The monument, a shallow temple shape, features a relief portrait of the statesman and orator. It was unveiled in 1946 by Taoiseach Eamon De Valera at the centenary of Parnell’s birth. Beneath the portrait is the inscription “Let my love be conveyed to my colleagues and the Irish people.”
