Fascinating history
Worth a visit to see the stain glass windows alone. Key part of the medieval history of Kilkenny. Small attraction but one not to be missed.

Promising exteriors, disappointing interiors
That’s pretty everything there is to say. The interior is all re-built in the 20C, and only an art historian would trace some more ancient layers of the brick. Could be skipped on your trek trough the city.

Black Abbey was a pleasant surprise
We were lucky to stumble upon the Black Abbey, and we were very happy that we did. We bought a City Pass at the Tourist Information office, and the Black Abbey is NOT included as one of the attractions since it is free. One of the ladies at the TI office just happened to mention that the abbey has the largest stained glass window in Ireland and that it is worth a visit. Well, she was right! Kilkenny’s Medieval Mile attractions are close together and it is easy to visit the Black Abbey. The stained glass windows are beautiful, and the history of the Abbey is interesting, too. Please do yourself the favor of making this a stop while in Kilkenny.

Beautiful Abbey
Beautiful architecture inside and out. We almost missed this beautiful Abbey on our way to the cathedral. Worth the stop.

Beautiful and Quaint
This Abbey has some beautiful stain glass windows in it. Very ornate. It is a little bit of a walk off the beaten path, but well worth it.
